Dowling Duncan and redesigning the American Dollar:
Why the size?
We have kept the width the same as the existing dollars. However we have changed the size of the note so that the one dollar is shorter and the 100 dollar is the longest. When stacked on top of each other it is easy to see how much money you have. It also makes it easier for the visually impaired to distinguish between notes. Why a vertical format?
When we researched how notes are used we realized people tend to handle and deal with money vertically rather than horizontally. You tend to hold a wallet or purse vertically when searching for notes. The majority of people hand over notes vertically when making purchases. All machines accept notes vertically. Therefore a vertical note makes more sense. Why different colors?
It’s one of the strongest ways graphically to distinguish one note from another. Why these designs?
We wanted a concept behind the imagery so that the image directly relates to the value of each note. We also wanted the notes to be educational, not only for those living in America but visitors as well. Each note uses a black and white image depicting a particular aspect of American history and culture. They are then overprinted with informational graphics or a pattern relating to that particular image.$1 – The first African American president
$5 – The five biggest native American tribes
$10 – The bill of rights, the first 10 amendments to the US Constitution
$20 – 20th Century America
$50 – The 50 States of America
$100 – The first 100 days of President Franklin Roosevelt. During this time he led the congress to pass more important legislations than most presidents pass in their entire term. This helped fight the economic crises at the time of the great depression. Ever since, every new president has been judged on how well they have done during the first 100 days of their term. This would be very coooool.
CAN THIS PLEASE HAPPEN!!! life would be so fun with colorful money! i miss my fun looking euros :(

Listening to this PL set from EDC Las Vegas as I contemplate my life on a Thursday summer night. So what shall I do next? I set a LOT of goals for 2012. I set out expecting to meet them all, but when it came down to practicality, I met all but one. But sacrificing that one goal allowed me to experience SO much more than my mind can even handle.
DC happened - an experience I could have NEVER predicted effecting my life as positively as it did.
DMB @ SPAC HAPPENED! - this has been a dream of mine since 08!! I can’t believe I got to camp out with some of the best people around all weekend while groovin to great music in upstate new york!
SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA amidst all of my other EUROPEAN ADVENTURES HAPPENED! And I didn’t even really plan for that…randomly googled “europe concerts in july” and SHM just HAPPENED to be in London on our only free day/night there. FATE kids. Fate.
EUROPE HAPPENED! A fantasy turned into a dream turned into an unreal reality. Unforgettable experiences.
INFECTED MUSHROOM is about to happen in a few days!! Getting 2 shows for the price of one. Gonna be CRAY
HOLLYWOODZ is happening AGAIN with allll of my best girl friends (minus juney, but she will always be there!) and slauren across the street!! Jesus, this is going to be absolute insanity, and I can’t wait for it to begin.
Who knows what else is in store for me during 2012. I’ve had more than incredible experiences, stories and lessons thus far - who could ask for more?
I think the best lesson I learned is to let life happen to you, and don’t question it too much. People come and go for a reason, your path travels the way it does for a reason, and I’m definitely ready to let it take me for a long and lovely ride.
I reblogged this a couple months back - funny how I can say something and it ends up turning out to be true.
I got on the bus for the airport at 3:15am and the ending of the trip finally hit me. I was hysterically crying the saddest of tears - it was just so upsetting to say goodbye to the greatest experience of my life and to the incredibly awesome people who made it that way.
What a trip. What a way to explore Europe for what it is. I’m beyond happy that I did this with so many of my friends (even a surprise friend from home!) and to go to so many different places with them is even cooler. I’m never going to forget this trip, ever.
This experience and these people have forever impacted me, and for that I am eternally grateful.
EUROPE 2012. CHECK!!!
10 am wake up - UGH I was tired. The tentative plan was shopping at markets and then the beach - but that only got completed at 3pm!! We did SO much walking around - too much if ya ask me hehe. After starting out with a huge crew and walking through the ghetto flea market with power tools, door knobs, clothes, bedding, and sink faucets (in gold, copper and silver..) I had enough of shopping! Get me to the beach!!
So I broke off from the group to hang with all of the guys, assuming they wanted to post up on the beach just as much as I did. We shared cheap tapas in the city center square and went though a huge food market before we, by chance, met up with everyone else again! To then walk miles on miles on miles to the same beach we walked to in 20 minutes yesterday…
NO COMPLAINING THOUGH - I’m in Barcelona!!
But as I was laying out on the beach, I couldn’t help but be so sad that the trip was over. I was so in love with how busy, yet relaxed I was during this experience. And knowing my over scheduled self, this next semester and real life are going to be so insane. I’m sad that I won’t be able to remove myself from my phone and reality forever - it was such a great, and extremely necessary experience. I’m really going to try to do things one day at a time, and not freak out about the future when I’m only sitting in the present.
It was also really depressing getting dressed for the farewell dinner - the one event all trip I was dreading. But the pregame turned out to be really fun with everyone and the restaurant was really nice! An amazing step up from the disgusting welcome dinner in Dublin (feels like years ago!). Wish I could tell you what I ate for dinner, or the rowdy speech I gave at dinner..but I can’t. Too black out to function lately. But I sobered up, thank god and remembered the rest of the night - because it just got more epic. After dinner, we all decided to go back to the hotel because it was a Monday night and it was easier/cheaper to drink there so we’d be around for our 3:15 am bus to take us to the airport!! (Sick joke…but it wasn’t a joke).
About 20 of us went to the rooftop pool to hang (told ya it came in handy) - but instead, it turned into a HUGE semi naked POOL PARTY!! Cara jumped in with her dress, then started a chant to get me in the pool - which obvs I couldn’t ignore. SO in I go with all of my clothes!! 4 guys jumped in together and did cannon balls! At least a quarter of the pool water went flying out!! It didn’t take long for the neighbors to call the police and for the hotel to kick us out of there!! LOL Running around the hotel soaking wet » Getting locked out of my room!!! Nick saved me though, and eventually my roomies came back so I could change into something else.
Jumped into bed, fell asleep for an hour and then it was time to say goodbye :(
FAREWELL DINNER - Pictures of the night, in order….
9:30am - wake up a hungover mess.
9:50am - i’m supposed to be dressed and ready to go for a morning walking tour and an afternoon on the beach.
clearly, that didn’t happen. but by day 23, my body literally couldn’t handle another tour of cathedrals and official city buildings. I’m in Barcelona in the gorgeous warm weather…my ass was going to the beach, all day everyday!! So it ended up being me, Gomes and Drew all day - and it was honestly one of my favorite days of the trip.
Gomes and I caught breakfast at the hotel a half hour before they closed…and we still got it for free. LUCKY THING OF THE DAY #1. Then, the day got even better because we randomly sat down at Table #23 on Day 23 of the trip!!! LUCKY THING #2. (If you haven’t caught on, 23 is my lucky number/birthday)
We had such a great convo over breakfast - laughing about the past, pondering deeply about the world and all of its issues. What a treat it was to talk about real life things while enjoying a slow & delicious breakfast with great company!! First time all trip I haven’t felt rushed in the morning, but still making the most out of my day!
Afterwards, we found Drew and headed to the beach! We decided to wing it by walking instead of doing the metro. Even though we kind of walked through the ghetto, it was still so nice to walk casually, at our own pace, without millions of tourists around us!! I was in my element. Except when we accidentally came across the NUDE BEACH. And I don’t just mean topless. FULL ON NAKED ASS OLD MEN TAKING BATHS ON THE BEACH. Legit the definition of “sun bathing” was before my young and naive eyes. It was pretty hilarious though, but definitely not a turn on LOL.
So we walked the opposite direction to the normal beach (which still had topless women, but i could handle it), ran out of sunscreen in about 2 minutes of half assing it, but said forget it, we’re livin it up anyway. Then posted up on the beach, right in front of Opium and all of the other high class clubs that are on the beach!! Great sun, (salt)water, waves, friends and TANNING. Took a break to catch an amazing lunch at an outdoor Italian restaurant Gomes loved. The food was better there than in Italy haha! We split bruschette and boretta cheese - NOM NOM NOM. Boretta is like mozzarella but gooey on the inside. OMG. Need it in America asap.
Laid out some more, called it a day at 5. Then I got tapas, beer and watched Olympic soccer with Cara at the Hotel Restaurant. Yet again, another relaxing and wonderful part to my day! We both got the same exact meal - chicken caesar salad, chicken croquettes (obsession) and a beer! Since we ate early, everyone else went out by the clubs - so Ca and I traveled the metro at night by ourselves….NOT smart when you look like a hoe in your clubbing outfit LOL. Don’t do that people. Pregamed on a bench outside the restaurant they ate at, which is totally legal in Europe….SO awesome. And then got in line for OPIUM!!!!
Our entire crew of 12 or so friendz got in line for the doors to open at midnight with our free passes - which actually worked!! So we got into one of the best night clubs in the world for FREE on a sunday night all looking fly and about to have the best night ever. LUCKY THING #4.
OPIUM WAS INCREDIBLE INSIDE!! There were so many different lounge rooms and bars - Me and Meg sat outside on the beachfront in the comfiest chairs just chatting as people were hustling into the club. Around 2 am, Opium got BUMPIN! I got my classic trip drink of Red Bull and Vodka, which was 14 euros mind you (YOLO) to follow my pregame of monster and smirnoff (woopz). Energizer bunny much? Off to the danceflooooor!
We found an open corner right next to the DJ booth in the front, and stayed there all night! The music was amaaazing house - much more American than Fabric in London - which was cool! I was so amped up and loving that I was dancing and raging hard with my closest friends on the trip, it was incredible. ‘Feel So Close’ by Calvin Harris came on, and it being one of the anthems of the trip, we all hugged each other in a circle and swayed back and forth together before the beat dropped - it was too presh haha.
Then, all of a sudden a SAXOPHONIST came out on stage and was improving off of the house songs! Legit for 20 minutes at a time, he was going OFF - i’ve never seen anything like it. LUCKY THING #5. What a treat it was for me to see a sax improv over house at one of the best nightclubs in Barcelona with the greatest friends by my side - PURE BLISS.
4:30am - we left.
5:00am - eat sandwich next door in lobby.
5:30am - FaceTime sesh with Slaur!
6:00am - I’m passed out with Ca, Lex, Nicole, and Nick all in my room.
OPIUM. YES. YES. YES.
Last city. Last few days on the greatest trip ever. Shits about to get WEIRD!
We spent all day on the bus traveling and I slept for most of it (again), which was nice. Get to Barcelona and check out the rooftop pool that Guiseppe was raving about….which was actually just a square with 5ft of water in it LOL. But we made use of it later on…
Then we got ready for our last unlimited wine dinners! WAH. This place was REALLY nice!! Guiseppe stepped his game up. I saw with the usual wine crew, plus Alexis, Nicole, Dani and Sarah. This wine was MAD STRONG too!! :) Yummmmay. As soon as we sat down, we all poured our glasses (high) and immediately asked the waiter for another bottle…awkward? Who cares.
Guiseppe then lead us all to the main club/bar area of Barcelona! All of it is along the beach/water, it’s so beautiful! And definitely my favorite place to go out in Europe so far. And the bars along the strip were ALL FREE TO GET IN! Woooohooo, says me who’s the broke college student traveling the world. I was the perfect wine/beer drunk too because I navigated the metro successfully to get us home! How? No clue. Had my shit together that night. LOL Only me would be nerdy enough to do that. The final unlimited wine dinner was yet again a sloppy success for everyone!
Barcelona Baby - What an epic way to end this trip!
Let’s go to the beach, beach - let’s get away. Have a drink, drink - what they gonna say!
Today, most of our trip got up and went on the bus to Nice! It’s def one of the most visited places by the wealthy, so it was cool to see all of these private jets and yachts everywhere! Rocks were again on the beach, so I was legit laying on a towel on top of straight rocks! Locals had padding to go underneath, but once I laid down for a little, I got used to it.

It felt so nice to just lay still for a few hours in the sun - it felt like I was truly on a vacation. Then I went swimming in the water for a bit. Once again, it felt so refreshing to be swimming - I tried to go a bit out to get a mini workout in, but I doubt it worked. Who knew I’d actually miss swimming in my pool! Soon after, I got convinced to go parasailing over the Med Sea in French Riviera - pretty sick stuff. Kevin and I did it together and had such a blast! We were screaming - “AMERICA. FUCK YEAH!” and loving the view we had of the dark blue sea, Nice, the mountains - everything! My favorite part was getting lowered into the deep blue sea for a few seconds and then going back up in the air - it was exhilarating!
I could go into detail about how terrible disappointing Monaco and Monte Carlo Casino were…but I won’t because I’m tired. In the end, I bought two great new dresses for the occasion, had a delicious meal with wine and the best shrimp and lobster bisque of my life, and got to see how the rich and famous live for a little. But if you want my advice, AC Casinos and Vegas SHIT on Monaco. Americans just know how to have fun.
